Build your own hand drum with local drum builder David Lupien of High Mountain Drums.  In this intensive three week workshop you will learn about drum shells, how to select and mount a drum head, use the Mali Weave to tension and tune your drum, and ultimately start playing, all on your own Ashiko.  The $150 cost of the workshop includes all the materials you will need: shell, rings, rope, and skin.  The instructor is a full time teacher, musician, and artist, dedicated to making each workshop as fun as it is educational.

  Community Ensemble
Drummers, Dancers and Singers…

Drum Central is very pleased to invite you to an introductory planning meeting for the formation of a community ensemble program. Ensemble will be open to all levels and will play world-rhythm music. Participation will be voluntary and have minimal requirements. The process will involve input from participants as to how it will run, the songs it performs – even the ensemble’s name.

Purpose of community ensemble program:
  • to offer (all levels) of students and makers of rhythm, song and dance a place to practice and perform the music they enjoy
  • to bring these performances to community events and activities as a means of raising awareness and promoting what we do
  • to bring the rhythm, song and dance from a variety of traditions and cultures together, thereby expanding cross cultural awareness and understanding

The intention would be to have a paid ensemble director with all other participation being voluntary. The first set of songs would be beginner level and come from differing traditions. Those songs would be ones available through local classes. Drum Central would book the ensemble for performances and presentations as a way to promote what we do, raise funds and provide reasonably priced performances and presentations to educators. Success from this program would mean adding a second performance set and intermediate level songs. Continued success would see the community ensemble be a training place for all levels of performers and the probability of professional level ensembles (in Boise!) being more commonplace.
